Hollywood screenwriting veteran Alan Trustman, writer of award-winning films "The Thomas Crown Affair," "Bullitt," "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs" and more, has returned as lead contributor at MoviesWorthWatching.com. The site offers current reviews on movies worth seeing -- and only movies worth seeing -- as well as features on what script elements make a screenplay commercially successful.
"After taking a brief break in writing reviews for the site, based largely on the fact that Hollywood hadn't been producing much worth watching this summer, I'm back to more regular reviewing."
The film that inspired Trustman to return to reviewing on the site is Martin Scorsese's "Departed," starring Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio.
"'The Departed' is the best picture of the year," says Trustman, "and one of the two best Scorseses, right up there with 'Goodfellas'. No, 'Goodfellas' was only excellent, 'The Departed' is superb. . .The picture is in a sense an homage to Whitey Bulger, except that Whitey, who has been in the wind and on the ten-most-wanted list for years, is both better looking and smarter than the character played by Jack Nicholson."
Unlike other film sites, MoviesWorthWatching.com only reviews movies it recommends you see, as opposed to assigning a "thumbs up, thumbs down" or star-based rating system.
"If I do not think a movie is worth seeing, I don't review it," said Trustman.
The author of The Screenplay Sell, Trustman has taught screenwriting at Harvard, NYU and Exeter, and in Cuba, "legally," he insists. His articles on film have appeared in the Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, and elsewhere. He is a member of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and The Writer's Guild of America and has served as a panelist for both the Toronto International and Austin Film Festivals.
Trustman's long-standing entertainment industry experience lend to a unique perspective on the evolution of American movies away from emotionally satisfying experiences.
"For most of the last century there was a huge market for movie movies about people to whom audiences could relate, with problems that piqued audience interest and endings that sent audiences out of the theatres satisfied, movies that audiences could talk about afterwards, where they could discuss whether they would have done or not done what the characters did in the movies, but the percentage of such movie movies started to dwindle 20 years ago, and the audience for such movie movies has been fed less and less over the last five years and has now stopped going to the movies. Could they be brought back? I wonder."
