?Unless you know someone in the entertainment industry, it is almost impossible to obtain representation or a movie deal in Hollywood.? Those are the famous words spoken by the dispirited writer who never managed to break into the Hollywood system.
In the new Millennium, author, screenwriter and freelance writer, Jessie Jamie Coleman disputes that old adage by taking a daring and different approach to breaking into ?the business?.
The loophole, Jessie refers to as the back door. Sidestepping Hollywood?s closed-door policy, and writing beyond the bounds of Los Angeles, Jessie hurtles into new literary territory by publishing her original screenplay, ?Sex on the Side.?
Every year thousands of screenplays are registered with the Writer?s Guild of America, making screenwriting one of the most competitive fields on the planet. And the reason is simple. A screenplay can sell for $1,000,000, even for the first-timer. This fact alone attracts many untalented writers, hoping and praying to score the million-dollar payday.
As a result of odds like these, Jessie dares to publish and sell her screenplays. While other writers are pleading and begging agents and producers to read their work, in hopes of securing representation or a deal, Jessie is selling hers at some bookstores as well as Amazon.com, even doing book signings at Barnes & Nobles where she usually sells out. Jessie started her home business, Autumn Girl Press, for the sole purpose of publishing work she truly believed in. The author believes that although ?Sex on the Side? is not yet a produced film doesn?t mean it cannot be read and enjoyed by a broad audience.
The sales at Amazon.com is more than she could have imagined. Though she always believed in her work, she had no idea ?Sex on the Side? would sell as well as it has. ?I?m so pleased? Jessie said, after receiving a glowing review from Midwest Book Review, which caters specifically to small presses such as Autumn Girl Press.
?Sex on the Side? is a romantic comedy about an irresistible attorney who is convinced that the world is populated with sex-starved women. Throughout his days and nights, he is bombarded with vivacious women, visiting his apartment, even accosting him on the street. Though he wants a more serious relationship, he is unable to attract a woman with an interest beyond casual sex.
Jessie has received numerous e-mails from readers inquiring about the inspiration for her romantic tale. She is not ashamed to admit that it stems from personal experience when she used to set up maintenance meetings with an ER doctor. Author admits that though the doctor wanted a more serious relationship, she had no interest in anything more than meaningless sex. This is a clear case of art imitating life. ?Men are sexual animals and women should have the right to behave likewise,? Jessie said.
Jessie has always known that her romantic comedy, ?Sex on the Side? was very funny, sexy and marketable, and she is certain that as soon as the right person reads it, she will move to the next level of her career.
In addition to earning money for the sale of her screenplay, being read, author admits to another advantage. ?I have managed to tap into the male audience with the format of this screenplay,? Jessie said. ?If ?Sex on the Side? had been written as a novel, it would have been classified as a romance novel, not the genre of choice of men.?
Jessie began journaling at age 13 and has never stopped. Journaling escalated into works of fiction with a focus on likeable, eccentric and complex characters. Though ?Sex on the Side? is a romantic comedy, her first love is the murder mystery, one in particular, ?His Bodyguard,? which she plans to publish in February of 2007.
Working at a Chicago law firm, Jessie continues to write stories that inspire as well as entertain. Her goal is to publish six more screenplays in the coming three years. ?Most importantly, I just want to be read,? Jessie said.
Jessie is absolutely obsessed with her literary career. When she is not working as a secretary, she is promoting her screenplay, working on future stories and researching marketing ideas. ?My literary career consumes me? admits Jessie. ?But it?s okay, because it?s one of my greatest joys, only one step down from an orgasm. It?s difficult to explain the joy of creating fascinating characters and interesting storylines to anyone who is not a writer, but it is pure delight.?
With so many screenwriters trying to break into the usiness, Jessie hopes that the publication of her screenplay will create a market for other screenwriter?s work.
