Most girls her age are busy. There's homework, SATs, fashion, hair, music, boys. Whew! So much to do, so little time. All of that is on Natasha's agenda. All of that, and her movie. She stands fully five foot three, with a face of innocence that might make an angel blush. Now between planning for graduation and her coming out party this summer, she is making history on the silver screen, yet you may never see her there -- unless you read the credits. You see, it would not be enough for her to simply be a star. 17-year-old Natasha Gill is calling the shots -- Co-Executive Producer on a $2 million dollar feature length motion picture.
Clearly, for all her innocence, Natasha is a young woman on a mission. One day, she'll readily tell you, she will be Governor of California, and "Americanizing Shelley", written by J.C. Walter and produced by American Pride Films Group, is part of that larger mission. In a sense, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's progression from action hero to chief executive has provided a road map for Natasha's ambitions. The difference is Arnold didn't have those aspirations in high school. But, back to the plot.
With a sparkle in her eye and a serious tone in her voice, Natasha admits to being more than a bit outspoken among her peers and is known as a fearless debater. Religion and politics are not off limits. Her family has given her high moral standards and an abiding love of the freedoms that make America strong. That alone, at times, puts her at odds with much of her MTV generation, but for her, "that just defines my market!"
Speaking like a child of the multi-media generation Natasha the Executive Producer is 17 going on 35. "We spend so much time criticizing America, we tend to forget how really wonderful a place it is ... how really kind and open and warm hearted Americans can be. That's what I want my movies to depict. Yeah, there's a dark side, but it seems like today all kids seem to concentrate on is that. We forget about what a blessing Americans have been to the world just because of who we are."
Responding to a pitch by family friend and Producer/Actress Namrata Singh Gujral ("The Agency", "Passions", "Kaante") and with the help of her clinical psychologist father, Natasha helped fund the majority of budget needed to produce "Americanizing Shelley" -- a Pygmalion-like, multicultural romantic comedy.
The film is produced Namrata Singh Gujral's production company "American Pride Films Group" and the company has nurtured the development of the film from its very birth and succeeds in bringing a Hollywood sophistication to "Bollywood" film making style. The film's director, "Sopranos" and "Northern Exposure" veteran Lorraine Senna shot "Americanizing Shelley" on locations in Los Angeles and India with Director of Photography, Christo Bakalov.
Is this 17 year old star struck? "Oh, a little." She admits. Natasha also plays a featured role in the film, along with some of the best, including Beau Bridges, Shaheen Khan ("Bend It Like Beckham"), Namrata Singh Gujral (Kaante, The Agency), Phillip Rhys ("24"/Nip/Tuck"), Will Wheaton (Star Trek), Erin Hershey ("Port Charles"), Brad Raider ("Greener Mountains"), Morgan Brittany ("Dallas") and Roneaco Lee ("Sister, Sister").
Even as it approaches its final cut, excitement is building around the project as word spreads through the blogosphere and http://www.americanizingshelleythemovie.com. Suffice it to say that with all that this disarming 17 year old brings to the table only part of this blockbuster story will be on the screen. What may very likely drive its success is the bigger story that comes in the very small package behind the cameras who could be executive producing the groundbreaking film project of the seas.
