Former Story Analyst Breaks Hollywood Code of Silence

reported by John Goldstein, CyberScreenwriter.com

A former script reader for a Hollywood mega-production company said she intends to reveal the system she had to use to analyze and ultimately reject hundreds of scripts and books from Hollywood hopefuls.

Identifying herself only as ?DMA,? the analyst-turned-producer stated, ?I used to stand between screenwriters and a sale, but now I?m on their side.? Her new seminar, ?The 1-3-5 System,? will arrive at 2006 film festivals just in time for the summer script submissions crunch, and an even more detailed book is in the works.

DMA hinted she plans to begin by revealing the strict rules of ?coverage? -- the confidential three-page document that evaluates a script submission for a production company. She?ll also take on the lucrative ?story structure? educational industry, which draws thousands of attendees a year for courses that can last up to six weeks.

?Story structure is simple,? said DMA, ?I can tell writers and producers what story analysts are specifically looking for in a couple of hours.? Festival audiences will learn to identify theme, correctly develop character arc and nail the elements of structure -- and they also will learn how a final script has to physically look so it will get past a receptionist?s desk. She?s even giving away a database trick virtually no new writers know about.

According to DMA, ?No one ever talks about how some writers get past the gatekeepers who read for these huge companies. I think that by finally exposing some trade secrets, I?m not just helping screenwriters, I?m helping out my fellow script readers. There are way too many rough, rough drafts going home with us on the weekends!?
